Education

As an educational professional, you are likely to come across siblings in a number of different ways. You may have a sibling in your class or group, whether that be in preschool, primary or secondary school. Or you might teach a sibling’s brother or sister with disability and know them that way. If you are a disability coordinator, you might gather information about siblings to incorporate into learning support plans for students with disability. If you are a school counsellor, you may have supported siblings cope with pressures, such as peers bullying them or their brother/sister with disability; or you may have helped siblings deal with struggles at home, and worked through practical problems such as not getting homework done on time. Whatever the connection, it is important to consider the specific needs of siblings, as they are a vulnerable student group who have unique needs of their own that may impact their wellbeing and learning outcomes.
