The SibAware pillars are designed to be embedded in policy and practice. They are aligned with best practice approaches to working with families and intend to strengthen the focus on siblings and promote the review and reform of current models of working to expand conversations, approaches and inclusion of siblings.
All family members are recognised and supported.
Siblings are provided with support early resulting in better outcomes for the whole family and the community.
Sibling relationships are crucial, regardless of caregiving.
Community connections are important for siblings, which in turn, benefits the whole family
● Early intervention for the whole family leads to better outcomes for all family members, including siblings.
● The whole family, including siblings, is affected when a child or children have a disability. Families with a child with disability need support for all family members to access and engage with the community.
● Siblings can face their own challenges and need support themselves to reach their own potential.
● Siblings can play a huge role in ensuring the wellbeing, social inclusion and safety of a person with disability over a lifetime. This is regardless of whether they are a caregiver for that person. A stronger sibling relationship in childhood will increase the chances of a strong relationship over a lifetime.
● The family unit plays a key role in the wellbeing and development of the siblings.
